MORRISON Maisie

A Good Friend

Mrs. Morrison was born at Gnowangerup and went to school on the mission.
"There was only one teacher at our school," she said,
"and there were lots of children.
I liked school and I liked to help the teacher. I used to take the small ones for reading and things like that."
Mrs. Morrison remembers the people who helped her on the mission. They were named Brother and Sister Wright.
"Brother and Sister Wright were good people and they worked hard to help us. I often think of them," said Mrs. Morrison.
When Mrs. Morrison was fourteen, she left school and got a job on a farm. She did housework.

Later, Mrs. Morrison married and she lived in Albany and Katanning.
Now, she is the mother of eight children and she lives in Perth. (1978)
"My children are now grown up.
My youngest son is fifteen and he goes to high school."
Mrs. Morrison began to go to school, too. She wanted to learn more so she could get a better job.

"I went to a school for adults and learned about looking after children. Later, I learned about Aboriginal Legal Services and about the law."
Mrs. Morrison now has a very important job. She helps girls and boys who get into trouble.
She goes to the courts every day.
"I go to the courts in Perth, Fremantle and Midland Junction'
I talk to the girls and boys.
I also talk to their mothers," she said.
Sometimes, Mrs. Morrison visits the girls and boys in their homes.
She helps them all she can.
"If the young people can get a job they are happier.
Mrs. Morrison said. "They get paid for work and that makes them feel better. Then they don't steal and do other silly things."
